McClellan-Palomar Airport

McClellan-Palomar is the go-to airport for private arrivals to coastal North San Diego County. The surrounding commercial airports (San Diego International and Orange County) handle the region's commercial traffic; KCRQ is built for general and business aviation, with FBO services and a low-friction arrival experience typical of GA facilities.

The runway is the main practical constraint here. At approximately 4,897 feet, it limits operations for larger cabin jets at full gross weight, particularly in warmer months when density altitude affects performance. Light and midsize jets operate comfortably. If you're flying a heavy or ultra-long-range aircraft, check with your operator on whether a weight or fuel restriction applies, or whether San Diego International or Lindbergh Field is a better option.

The airport sits at about 331 feet elevation, a few miles inland from the Carlsbad coastline. The surrounding area is residential and the airport has noise abatement procedures in effect. Plan arrivals and departures accordingly if you have schedule flexibility.

The airport is well-positioned for North County destinations. La Costa Resort is roughly 4 miles away, about 10 minutes by car. Rancho Santa Fe is around 15 miles southeast, typically 20 to 25 minutes. Del Mar and Solana Beach are about 20 miles south, 25 to 30 minutes. Downtown San Diego is 30 miles south, 40 to 50 minutes depending on I-5 traffic.

Car service is the standard option. Ride-share pickups work at the FBO ramp. If your destination is Los Angeles, the drive north on I-5 runs 80 to 100 miles and can take 90 minutes to over two hours depending on time of day. In that case it may be worth weighing a direct flight into Van Nuys or Burbank instead.
