Brown Field Municipal Airport

Brown Field sits at the southern edge of San Diego, just north of the Otay Mesa border crossing into Tijuana. For private aviation, its main draw is proximity to the border: passengers crossing between Southern California and Baja California often use KSDM rather than dealing with San Diego International. The airport has U.S. Customs and Border Protection services on-site, which makes it a practical entry point for flights from Mexico.

The airport is quieter and less congested than KSAN, with no slot requirements and straightforward FBO access. Runway 26L/08R is 7,972 feet, long enough for most large-cabin jets. Three operators actively fly out of KSDM, so ramp space is generally available without advance coordination. If your trip involves Tijuana, Ensenada, or the Baja coast, this is likely your best landside option on the US side.

Downtown San Diego is 16 miles north, roughly 25 to 35 minutes by car depending on I-805 traffic. Chula Vista is about 6 miles north and takes 10 to 15 minutes. The Otay Mesa Port of Entry is approximately 3 miles from the airport, making it practical for passengers continuing into Tijuana by car or pedestrian crossing. Car service and black car operators serve the airport, though availability is thinner than at KSAN or KMYF, so pre-booking is advisable. There is no commercial helicopter transfer service operating from KSDM.
