San Diego International Airport

KSAN sits on the edge of San Diego Bay, roughly 3 miles from the Gaslamp Quarter and less than a mile from Little Italy. For a major metro airport, the proximity to the city center is unusual and is one of the main reasons private passengers choose it over reliever options like Montgomery-Gibbs (KMYF) or Gillespie (KSEE).

The airport has a single runway (09/27) shared by commercial, cargo, and general aviation traffic. That makes it one of the busiest single-runway airports in the country. Private aircraft use the same airspace and ground infrastructure as the airlines, so expect ATC delays during peak commercial windows. FBOs include Signature Flight Support and Sheltair San Diego, both on the west side of the field with ramp access away from the terminal.

Noise abatement procedures apply at night due to the airport's position in a dense residential neighborhood. Stage 2 aircraft are prohibited. Arrivals and departures over Mission Hills and North Park generate complaints, and the approach over downtown on runway 27 is closely monitored. International arrivals clear customs on-site, which is a meaningful advantage over smaller San Diego-area airports.

Downtown San Diego is 3 miles from the terminal, typically 10 to 15 minutes by car. La Jolla is about 12 miles north, roughly 20 to 25 minutes without traffic. Coronado requires a bridge crossing and runs about 20 minutes. The Gaslamp Quarter, Petco Park, and the Convention Center are all under 5 miles. Car service from operators like AceRide or national black car companies meets clients at the FBO ramp. Uber and Lyft also work at the FBO level. The Tijuana border crossing at San Ysidro is approximately 20 miles south, around 30 minutes in normal traffic.
