Moffett Federal Airfield

Moffett Federal Airfield sits inside NASA Ames Research Center and is jointly used by NASA, the military, and private aviation operators. Because it is a federal facility, access requires advance coordination. Charter passengers should expect security procedures not typical at general aviation airports. The FBO on field is Signature Flight Support, which handles private arrivals and departures.

The airfield's runways can accommodate large-cabin jets, and the apron area is uncongested compared to the San Jose and San Francisco metro airports. That said, operations here are more restricted than at a standard GA airport. Pilots need prior permission to land, and the approval process adds lead time to trip planning. If your charter operator is not already familiar with Moffett procedures, factor in extra coordination time.

Moffett is the closest airport to the core of Silicon Valley. For meetings in Sunnyvale, Mountain View, or with companies along the 101 corridor, no other airport comes closer. San Jose International is about 10 miles away but adds highway time; Palo Alto Airport is an alternative for smaller aircraft.

Downtown Mountain View is about 2 miles from the airfield. Palo Alto is 7 miles south. San Jose's Caltrain station and downtown core are roughly 10 miles away, a 20-minute drive without traffic. San Francisco is 35 miles north, typically 45 to 60 minutes by car depending on Bay Bridge congestion.

Car service and black car options are available through the FBO. The Mountain View Caltrain station, about 2 miles away, provides direct rail to San Francisco in roughly 60 minutes. For most charter passengers arriving for tech corridor meetings, a car service pickup is the standard option.
