Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole

PHKO is one of the few large airports in the US with an almost entirely open-air terminal. The design works in Hawaii's climate and means arrivals feel different from the moment the door opens. Private passengers bypass the commercial terminal entirely and use the FBO side, which has its own ramp, lounge, and handling staff.

The airport sits on lava fields at Keahole Point with no surrounding obstructions, so approaches are straightforward and weather holds are rare. This part of the Big Island gets significantly less rain than the Hilo side, and the Kona Coast sees sun the majority of the year. Afternoon winds from the northwest can produce mild turbulence on approach but rarely cause diversions.

No slot reservations are required. Peak congestion occurs around major holidays and during events like the Ironman World Championship in October, when charter traffic increases sharply and FBO ramp space fills up. Coordinating parking and handling in advance during those windows is advisable.

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is approximately 4 miles north of the airport, about a 10-minute drive. The Fairmont Orchid and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel are around 25 to 30 miles north along the Queen Kaahumanu Highway, roughly 30 to 35 minutes. Kailua-Kona town is 9 miles south, about 15 minutes. Car rental desks are at the commercial terminal. Private car and SUV service is available through local operators and resort concierge programs. There is no helicopter transfer infrastructure at PHKO, but helicopter tours and charters operate from a separate helipad facility nearby.
