Sankt Gallen Altenrhein Airport

Altenrhein sits on the southern shore of Lake Constance, just west of the Austrian border. It is a small regional airport that handles both scheduled and private traffic, which keeps the terminal uncrowded and ground handling straightforward. Customs clearance is available on-site, making it a practical entry point for flights from outside the Schengen zone.

The airport does not operate around the clock. Arrivals and departures outside published hours require prior coordination with the airport authority. Pilots and operators should confirm slot availability for early morning or evening movements, particularly on weekends. The airport is not subject to the same congestion as Zurich, and parking is generally available without advance booking for shorter stays.

St. Gallen city center is about 15 km west, roughly 20 minutes by car. Bregenz, the capital of Austria's Vorarlberg state, is 20 km east across the Rhine, around 25 minutes. Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, is 35 km south, approximately 35 minutes. Zurich is around 85 km southwest, about 75 minutes by road. Car hire is available at the airport. For Liechtenstein destinations, a direct car transfer is the most practical option as there is no rail connection to Vaduz.
