San Bernardino International Airport

San Bernardino International Airport occupies the former Norton Air Force Base, closed in 1994 and converted to civilian use. The military legacy left it with infrastructure far beyond what a city of this size would otherwise have, including a 10,000-foot primary runway that can handle any business aircraft without restriction. Heavy jets that might require special handling elsewhere operate routinely here.

No slot requirements, no congestion. This is an uncongested field where you can expect quick ramp access and predictable ground times. It draws operators looking for an alternative to Ontario (KONT) and the LA basin airports, particularly for cargo and charter movements that don't need to be downtown Los Angeles. The Inland Empire has grown substantially as a logistics and distribution hub, and the airport reflects that. Charter passengers arriving for business in the region will find it efficient. Those using it as an entry point to Palm Springs or Big Bear should factor in the drive times rather than treating it as a desert gateway.

San Bernardino city center is about 3 miles from the terminal, roughly 10 minutes by car. Palm Springs is 50 miles east, about 50 minutes on I-10 with no traffic. Downtown Los Angeles is 65 miles west, 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the time of day. Big Bear Lake is 40 miles north but involves mountain roads, plan on 1 hour 15 minutes. Riverside is 15 miles southwest, about 20 minutes. Rental cars are available on the field. Car service from the Inland Empire is straightforward to arrange; most LA-area private aviation ground handlers cover this airport.
