Lakefront Airport

Lakefront Airport is the primary general aviation option for New Orleans, sitting on the city's north edge along Lake Pontchartrain. It handles private and charter traffic without the congestion of Louis Armstrong International (KMSY), which is 16 miles west and oriented toward commercial flights. There are no slot requirements and no significant operational restrictions for general aviation.

The airport is uncontrolled during certain overnight hours, so coordinate arrival times with your FBO. Fuel and ramp handling are available through on-field operators. The facility is smaller and more straightforward than a typical Class C reliever airport, which means faster ground times and less ramp congestion. For most New Orleans private trips, Lakefront is the right choice unless your aircraft requires customs or the operator specifies otherwise.

Downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter are about 6 miles south, typically 15 to 20 minutes by car depending on traffic. The Garden District is roughly 8 miles and 20 to 25 minutes. Metairie, where many business parks and hotels are concentrated, is about 4 miles west and under 15 minutes. Car service and rideshare (Uber, Lyft) are both available from the airport. There is no helicopter transfer service to speak of for this route given the short distances involved.
