KMSY handles both commercial and private traffic on the same field, so expect some congestion during peak travel periods, particularly around Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, the Sugar Bowl, and the NFL playoffs when New Orleans draws large crowds. FBO options include Signature Flight Support, which operates on the south side of the field. The airport has no slot requirements and no mandatory noise curfews, so scheduling flexibility is good year-round.

The terminal complex was rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina and a new terminal opened in November 2019. Private passengers use the FBO facilities rather than the main terminal, so the commercial construction and foot traffic generally won't affect your arrival or departure experience. Ramp space can get tight during major events, so if you're flying in for Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest, coordinate with your FBO well in advance.

Downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter are about 13 miles east via I-10, typically a 25 to 35 minute drive in normal traffic. During major festivals or Saints game days, that stretch of I-10 can back up significantly and the drive can run 60 minutes or more. Car service and black car operators are plentiful given the volume of event travelers the city draws. Rental cars are available at the airport. Rideshare pickup is straightforward from the FBO side. There is no rail connection between the airport and downtown.
