Wilmington International Airport

Wilmington International is the primary airport for the Cape Fear region, handling both commercial and general aviation traffic from a single facility. For private passengers, the airport offers a straightforward experience with no slot requirements and minimal congestion. The 8,016-foot primary runway (6/24) accommodates most cabin-class jets without restriction.

The airport has FBO services with ramp access, fuel, and crew facilities. Because it shares the field with scheduled airline operations, expect standard airport infrastructure rather than a purely private terminal environment. That said, traffic levels stay low enough that ground delays are rarely a factor.

Wilmington draws charter passengers primarily for beach access, corporate visits to the Port of Wilmington corridor, and film industry work. The area hosts one of the largest film production studios on the East Coast, which generates consistent private aviation demand year-round.

Downtown Wilmington is 4 miles south of the airport, a 10-minute drive. Wrightsville Beach is 12 miles east, typically 20 minutes without summer beach traffic. Topsail Island runs about 35 miles north (45 minutes). Carolina Beach and Kure Beach are 20 miles south, around 30 minutes.

Car services and rental counters are available at the terminal. Driving is the practical option for most destinations in the region. Myrtle Beach is 75 miles south on US-17, roughly 90 minutes by car.
