San Marcos Regional Airport

San Marcos Regional sits between two of Texas's largest metro areas, which is its main appeal for private aviation. When Austin-Bergstrom is overwhelmed during events like SXSW, ACL Fest, or Formula 1 at Circuit of the Americas, KHYI becomes a practical alternative for anyone whose destination is south Austin, the I-35 corridor, or the Texas Hill Country.

The airport is uncontrolled, with no slot requirements and no scheduled commercial traffic. Operations are straightforward. The runway (RWY 13/31) is 6,000 feet, accommodating most light jets and midsize aircraft comfortably. Larger cabin aircraft should confirm runway suitability with the FBO before booking.

Silverhawk Aviation handles FBO services at KHYI, including fuel, ramp, and hangar access. The facility is smaller than what you'd find at Austin Executive (KEDC) or Austin-Bergstrom, but for a quick turn or a private group heading to New Braunfels, San Marcos, or the Wimberley area, it works well.

San Marcos is 30 miles south of downtown Austin, roughly a 35-minute drive via I-35 in normal traffic. San Antonio's Pearl District and River Walk are about 50 miles south, typically 50 to 60 minutes by car. New Braunfels is 20 miles south, under 25 minutes. The Wimberley area is about 25 miles west, a 35-minute drive through Hill Country roads.

Rental cars are the most practical option. Rideshare service is available but can be inconsistent at the airport. For events or group arrivals, pre-arranging car service from Austin or San Antonio is advisable.
