Bangor International Airport

Bangor International Airport is a former Strategic Air Command base, and its infrastructure reflects that origin. The main runway is 11,440 feet long, one of the longest in New England, which means it can handle any aircraft in the private fleet without weight or performance restrictions. The airport is a designated US Customs port of entry, making it a practical first stop for transatlantic arrivals before continuing to Boston or New York.

The airport operates 24 hours a day. There are no slot requirements and no significant congestion issues. Private jet passengers clear through a separate FBO facility away from the commercial terminal. Ground handling is straightforward and turnaround times are generally fast.

For passengers headed to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, or the broader Downeast Maine coast, KBGR is the closest airport that can reliably handle midsize and large-cabin jets. The smaller Bar Harbor Airport (KBHB) handles turboprops and light jets but has runway and service limitations, particularly outside summer months.

Downtown Bangor is 3 miles from the airport, roughly 10 minutes by car. Bar Harbor and the entrance to Acadia National Park are 50 miles east on Route 1A and Route 3, about 60 to 75 minutes depending on season. Moosehead Lake is 70 miles north, approximately 90 minutes. Portland is 130 miles south on I-95, about 2 hours. Boston is 250 miles south, roughly 3.5 to 4 hours by car.

Rental cars are available at the airport. Car services and black car transfers operate out of Bangor, though for remote destinations in the region it is worth arranging ground transport in advance, particularly in peak summer and fall foliage seasons when availability tightens.
