Lihue Airport

Lihue Airport is the only commercial service airport on Kauai and handles all private jet traffic to the island. There is no general aviation-only facility on Kauai, so private aircraft share the field with inter-island turboprops and mainland narrowbodies. The airport sits at sea level on the eastern coast, with approach patterns over Nawiliwili Bay.

The FBO ramp is on the west side of the field. Private passengers avoid the commercial terminal entirely and clear through the FBO. For arrivals from the US mainland, this is a domestic operation with no customs requirement. International arrivals should confirm customs availability in advance, as staffing at PHLI is limited compared to Honolulu.

Kauai sees significant seasonal congestion, particularly December through March and June through August. Slot coordination is not required, but FBO ramp space can fill quickly during peak periods. Call ahead for larger cabin aircraft.

The airport is 2 miles from central Lihue and about 13 miles north of Poipu, the main resort corridor on the south shore. The drive from the FBO to Poipu takes roughly 25 minutes via Kaumualii Highway. Princeville and the North Shore are 28 miles away, a 45 to 55 minute drive depending on traffic near Kapaa. Car rental counters are available at the main terminal, and rental cars remain the most practical option for exploring the island. Rideshare service exists on Kauai but coverage and wait times are unreliable outside Lihue. Helicopter transfers from the airport to remote coastal areas are available through operators based on the field.
