Empty leg flights from Kauai

Kauai is the most remote of the main Hawaiian islands for private aviation purposes. Lihue Airport (PHLI) handles both commercial and private traffic on the island's east coast, and the private aviation market here is almost entirely inbound leisure. No significant corporate base exists, and the island's population of 72,000 doesn't generate institutional charter demand.

What Kauai does generate is consistent repositioning legs. The island's luxury resort corridor (the North Shore Princeville area, the Poipu Beach resorts in the south, and the exclusive private properties around Hanalei Bay) draws ultra-high-net-worth visitors who arrive on heavy jets from the mainland. The North Shore is Kauai's most sought-after destination, but it's 30 miles from Lihue Airport -- an hour's drive around the north coast, or shorter via helicopter charter. Many guests arriving at PHLI add a helicopter leg for the transfer or for sightseeing over the Na Pali Coast.

The private aviation window follows the same seasonal pattern as the other Hawaii islands, with December through March peak and summer family travel as secondary. Unlike Maui, which has two airports, Kauai has only Lihue as an option, concentrating all traffic at a single facility.

Lihue Airport (PHLI) is Kauai's only public airport. The runway is 6,500 feet at 153 feet elevation, which handles light jets and most midsize jets without restriction. Large-cabin jets operating within their weight limits can use the field; heavy and ultra-long-range aircraft generally route through Honolulu or Maui with a connection.

The general aviation area at PHLI has limited ramp space relative to the airport's commercial traffic. Coordination with the airport authority is recommended for private jet arrivals, particularly during the December-March peak when the ramp sees its heaviest GA load. No dedicated FBO with the full-service infrastructure of a mainland urban airport -- fuel, parking, and limited ground services are available.

Princeville Airport (PHPR) on the North Shore is a small general aviation strip at 2,284 feet elevation with a 2,870-foot runway. It handles small piston aircraft and is essentially unusable for business jets. Some guests use it for helicopter or small plane sightseeing but not for primary arrival.

Ground transport from Lihue to the major resort areas: Poipu Beach is 15 minutes south. Kapaa and the east side, 15 minutes north. Princeville and the North Shore, 45-60 minutes north on Kuhio Highway.
