Maui's private aviation market is almost entirely inbound. The island generates very few outbound legs because almost no one is based there who would charter privately for business. What Maui produces is a steady supply of outbound repositioning legs as operators who flew wealthy travelers out from the mainland return empty to California, or hop between islands before the return.

The mainland-to-Maui market concentrates on the West Coast. Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle are the primary origin cities, and the routes run heavily from December through March (winter escapes) and in June and July (summer family travel). Those are the windows when operators fly groups out and need their aircraft elsewhere, producing the most predictable empty leg supply.

Kapalua Airport (PHJH) on Maui's northwest coast is the private aviation gateway for the resort corridor. It handles turboprops and smaller jets and is located minutes from Kapalua, Napili, and Kaanapali resorts. The runway is 3,000 feet at 256 feet elevation -- a significant constraint that limits operations to aircraft with short-field capability.

Kahului Airport (PHOG) is the island's main commercial airport with a general aviation ramp. It handles private jets of all sizes and is about 30-40 minutes from the West Maui resort corridor by car. For aircraft that can't operate at Kapalua's short runway, Kahului is the standard alternative.

Kapalua Airport (PHJH) handles turboprops (King Air, Pilatus) and some light jets that can operate on a 3,000-foot runway. The setting is exceptional -- the approach over the pineapple fields and coast is one of the more scenic approaches in the US. FBO services are basic; fuel, parking, and ground transport coordination are available but the facility is smaller than a mainland urban FBO. International arrivals must clear Customs at Kahului or Honolulu before proceeding to Kapalua.

Kahului Airport (PHOG) has a dedicated general aviation ramp with FBO services. It accommodates all aircraft sizes including heavy and ultra-long-range jets. The ramp is separate from commercial operations, though the airport handles significant commercial volume and ground operations can slow during peak periods. Kahului is 7 miles from the town of Kahului and 30 miles from Kapalua by road.

Hana Airport (PHHN) serves the remote Hana district on Maui's east coast with a 3,605-foot runway. It's accessible to turboprops and handles personal aircraft for those staying at the Travaasa Hana resort. No public FBO; fuel and services are limited.
