Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport

Sitka has no road connection to the Alaska highway system. Air and ferry are the only ways in or out. For passengers on a schedule, private aviation eliminates the layover uncertainty that commercial routing through Seattle or Juneau adds.

The airport sits on Japonski Island, directly across from downtown Sitka. Southeast Alaska weather runs wet and overcast most of the year. Fog and low ceilings cause delays and diversions year-round, including in summer. If your trip has a fixed deadline, build in a one-day weather buffer.

The airport shares its facility with Alaska Airlines commercial flights, but traffic volume is low enough that arriving passengers on charter flights clear the ramp and terminal quickly without congestion.

The airport is about 1 mile from downtown Sitka across the O'Connell Bridge, a 5-minute drive. Car rental counters are at the terminal. Taxi service exists but is limited in a town of 8,500 people, so arranging ground transport in advance is the safer option.

Sitka's road network covers only the immediate area around town. There is no driving route to Juneau, Anchorage, or any other Alaska city.
