About Alaska Aero Services Sitka

Alaska Aero Services provides FBO handling, fueling, and ground support at Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport, one of the most dramatically situated airports in North America. The runway extends along a causeway off Japonski Island with both ends terminating at the ocean, and the airport has been recognized as one of the ten most thrilling landing experiences in the world. For passengers, the approach offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and Sitka Sound before touchdown on the 7,200-foot strip.

As part of the Atlantic Aviation family, Alaska Aero Services delivers a consistent set of FBO services including Jet A and 100LL fueling, deicing, ground handling, overnight hangar storage, and cargo support. The crew can arrange U.S. Customs services for international flights and coordinate local ground transportation, hotel reservations, and courtesy shuttle rides.

Sitka is a former Russian colonial capital and carries that history in its architecture, including St. Michael's Cathedral and the Russian Bishop's House, both national historic landmarks. The town also sits at the edge of the Tongass National Forest and is surrounded by islands, channels, and old-growth rainforest that support world-class fishing for salmon and halibut, sea kayaking, and wildlife viewing. Humpback whales, sea otters, and brown bears are regularly spotted in the area.

Weather is the primary operational consideration at Sitka. Coastal fog, heavy rain, and high winds are frequent, and ocean storms can push waves and debris onto the runway surface. Instrument approaches are standard operating procedure for much of the year. Despite these challenges, the airport handles regular jet service and is well equipped for private aircraft operations with proper planning.

Operations at Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport

The airport is about 1 mile from downtown Sitka across the O'Connell Bridge, a 5-minute drive. Car rental counters are at the terminal. Taxi service exists but is limited in a town of 8,500 people, so arranging ground transport in advance is the safer option. Sitka's road network covers only the immediate area around town. There is no driving route to Juneau, Anchorage, or any other Alaska city.
