Sion Airport

Sion Airport sits on the floor of the Rhône Valley at 1,585 feet elevation, flanked by the Alps on both sides. For private aviation, it is the closest fixed-wing option for Verbier, Crans-Montana, and the broader Valais ski region. Geneva is 155km away and requires a 1.5-hour drive through the valley once you land there, making Sion the practical choice for anyone heading to a Valais resort.

The airport is operated jointly with the Swiss Air Force, which shapes how it runs. It is not a 24-hour facility, and a noise curfew limits movements in the late evening and early morning. Slot coordination is required during peak winter weekends when private jet traffic surges for the ski season. Plan arrivals and departures well in advance from late December through March. The FBO facilities are functional rather than elaborate, but handling is efficient and customs clearance is available for international arrivals.

Crans-Montana is approximately 25km from the airport, about 30 minutes by car via the valley road and the winding climb up to the plateau. Verbier is roughly 40km, taking 45 to 50 minutes depending on conditions. For Zermatt, the drive is about 90km to Täsch (the last point cars can access), then a short train into the car-free village. Helicopter transfers to any of the major Valais resorts are available from operators based in the region and are common for guests avoiding mountain roads in poor weather. Pre-arranged car service with meet-and-greet is standard for private arrivals.
