Pisa International Airport

Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei) handles both commercial and private traffic on a joint civil-military airfield. The airport is slot-coordinated during peak periods, which typically means advance slot requests are required for arrivals and departures. Private passengers use dedicated FBO handling rather than the main commercial terminal, so the experience is substantially faster than it looks from the outside.

The airport sits in flat coastal terrain with no significant terrain obstacles, but the shared military use means certain procedures are fixed. Noise abatement procedures apply on departures, particularly at night. If your trip involves a late dinner in Florence or Lucca, confirm your departure window with your operator before finalizing plans.

Customs and immigration are available here, making it a viable entry point for transatlantic or intra-European private flights without a technical stop. General handling quality is consistent with major Italian aviation hubs.

Pisa city center is 2km from the terminal, under 10 minutes by car. Florence is approximately 80km east via the SGC Fi-Pi-Li highway, typically 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Lucca is 20km north, about 25 minutes. Siena is roughly 130km southeast, around 1.5 to 2 hours.

Car hire and taxis are available directly at the airport. A train station (Pisa Aeroporto) is connected to the terminal with direct services to Pisa Centrale and onward connections to Florence Santa Maria Novella, making it one of the few Italian airports with a direct rail link usable for ground crew or light luggage situations.
