Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport

Athens Eleftherios Venizelos opened in 2001 and replaced the old Hellenikon airport. It handles all international private jet arrivals and departures for the Athens metro area, with a dedicated general aviation facility separate from the main terminal. The airport is a Level 3 slot-coordinated airport during peak summer months (roughly June through September), when demand from charter and private traffic spikes sharply as passengers transit to the Greek islands. Outside peak season, slot requirements are less restrictive.

The GA facility offers customs and immigration clearance on-site, making it straightforward for international arrivals. Handling agents including ASL Group operate at LGAV and arrange FBO services, customs, and ground transport. The airport operates around the clock, though noise abatement procedures apply at night. Crew planning for late-night departures should confirm handling availability in advance, as GA staffing can be thinner after midnight.

Athens is a common positioning point for charters heading into the Aegean. Operators frequently use LGAV as a base before island-hopping to Mykonos (LGMK), Santorini (LGSR), or Corfu (LGKR), all of which have limited GA infrastructure and congestion issues of their own during summer.

The city center (Syntagma Square) is 27km west of the airport. By car or private transfer, expect 35 to 50 minutes in normal conditions, longer during Athens rush hour (typically 7am-9am and 5pm-8pm on weekdays). The Attiki Odos ring road is the primary route and is tolled. Car services and taxis are available at the airport; pre-booked private transfers are the standard choice for private jet passengers. Piraeus port, the departure point for ferries to the islands, is about 40km from the airport and takes 45 to 60 minutes by car. Metro Line 3 connects the airport to central Athens in roughly 40 minutes, useful for smaller groups or passengers traveling light.
