Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport

Jacqueline Cochran Regional sits in Thermal, on the desert floor of the Coachella Valley at roughly 115 feet below sea level. That puts it well east of Palm Springs proper, closer to La Quinta, Indio, and the polo grounds than to the Strip-style resort corridor along Highway 111. For most of the year it operates with minimal congestion, which is the main reason private operators prefer it over the busier Palm Springs International.

The airport draws a surge of traffic twice each spring, during Coachella and Stagecoach weekends in April. During those periods the ramp fills quickly and FBO coordination in advance is non-negotiable. Slot times, ramp reservations, and fuel pre-ordering are standard practice for those events. Outside of festival season, arrivals and departures are generally uncomplicated.

The runway accommodates large-cabin jets without restriction. FBO services include fuel, hangars, and ground handling. The airport is named after Jacqueline Cochran, the record-setting aviator who made her home in the Coachella Valley.

La Quinta and its cluster of golf resort hotels are about 12 miles northwest, a 15-minute drive. Palm Springs is roughly 25 miles up Highway 111, typically 30 to 35 minutes by car. The Empire Polo Club, home to Coachella and Stagecoach, is 5 miles from the airport. Car service and SUV rentals are available through FBO coordination. There is no scheduled ground shuttle service.
