Telluride Regional Airport

Telluride Regional Airport is one of the highest public-use airports in the United States at 9,078 feet MSL. The single runway (9,000 feet long) and surrounding San Juan Mountain terrain impose real operational limits: the airport is day VFR only, with no instrument approaches. Flights must arrive and depart in visual conditions during daylight hours. Your operator will plan accordingly, and itineraries can shift if weather closes in, which happens fast at this elevation.

Weight and performance restrictions limit which aircraft can operate here. Light and midsize jets handle the field well. Heavy jets and ultra-long-range aircraft typically cannot use KTEX due to the combination of runway length, elevation, and terrain. If you're chartering a large-cabin aircraft, your operator may route you through Montrose Regional (KMTJ) instead. KTEX does not have customs or CBP facilities, so international arrivals must clear entry elsewhere.

The FBO at KTEX offers fuel, ground handling, and ramp parking. During ski season (roughly December through March) and summer peak periods, ramp space is limited and advance notice to the FBO is recommended. The airport has no overnight operations, so late-evening departures need to be planned before last light.

Downtown Telluride is about 5 miles from the airport by road, a 15 to 20 minute drive on Colorado Route 145. Mountain Village, the ski-in/ski-out village at the base of the Telluride Ski Resort, is accessible from downtown via a free public gondola. Car service and SUV transfers are available through local providers; advance booking is recommended in peak season. Helicopter transfers can be arranged for access to remote ranch properties or backcountry destinations in the region. Montrose Regional Airport (KMTJ), the alternative for larger jets, is approximately 65 miles north on US-550, about a 1.5-hour drive.
