About Telluride Regional Airport Authority

The Telluride Regional Airport Authority operates the sole FBO at the highest commercial airport in North America, sitting at 9,078 feet above sea level on a mesa top six miles from downtown Telluride. The airport-run facility provides daily service from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a strict noise curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. that prohibits all jet operations during those hours.

Terminal amenities include a pilot lounge, free Wi-Fi, gourmet catering available on request, ground power, lavatory service, and overnight hangar rental. Ground transportation options are well organized given the remote mountain location, with rental cars, limousines, town cars, and four-wheel-drive vehicles available, the last being essential during winter months when mountain roads demand capable vehicles.

The single runway, 9/27, stretches 7,111 feet, but the combination of extreme elevation, surrounding terrain, and mountain weather creates one of the most challenging operating environments for private jets in the United States. Density altitude during summer afternoons can exceed 12,000 feet, significantly affecting aircraft performance. Weather-related diversions to Montrose (35 miles north) are common, and many insurance policies and aircraft management companies impose specific pilot qualification requirements for Telluride operations.

For passengers, the reward justifies the complexity. Telluride's box canyon setting, world-class skiing at Telluride Ski Resort, the free gondola connecting Telluride to Mountain Village, and a vibrant arts and festival calendar (including the Telluride Film Festival, Bluegrass Festival, and Blues and Brews) make it one of Colorado's most desirable mountain destinations. The FBO's straightforward, airport-authority approach keeps the ground experience efficient and unpretentious.

Downtown Telluride is about 5 miles from the airport by road, a 15 to 20 minute drive on Colorado Route 145. Mountain Village, the ski-in/ski-out village at the base of the Telluride Ski Resort, is accessible from downtown via a free public gondola. Car service and SUV transfers are available through local providers; advance booking is recommended in peak season. Helicopter transfers can be arranged for access to remote ranch properties or backcountry destinations in the region. Montrose Regional Airport (KMTJ), the alternative for larger jets, is approximately 65 miles north on US-550, about a 1.5-hour drive.
