Cranbrook/Canadian Rockies International Airport

CYXC is the main commercial and private aviation airport for the East Kootenay region of BC. It sits at 2,906 feet above sea level on the outskirts of Cranbrook, giving it a short runway environment that suits turboprops and light-to-midsize jets well. Larger heavy jets should verify performance data before planning an arrival, particularly in summer when density altitude rises.

The airport is a designated Canadian port of entry, so international arrivals on private aircraft can clear CBSA customs here. Advance CANPASS or eAPIS notification is required. The airport is not staffed around the clock, and customs availability outside standard hours typically requires pre-arrangement through the CBSA Border Operations Centre. Charter passengers coming from the US should confirm customs hours with their operator before departure.

The FBO environment is relatively simple. Expect general aviation-level handling rather than large-market FBO services. Fuel and basic services are available, but passengers accustomed to large-market fixed-base operators should set expectations accordingly.

Fernie Alpine Resort is 35 km east of the airport, roughly 30 to 35 minutes by car on Highway 3. Kimberley Alpine Resort is about 30 km north, around 25 minutes. The town of Cranbrook itself is under 10 minutes from the terminal. Car rental counters are available at the airport through the major national agencies. There is no scheduled helicopter transfer service, but charter operators in the region can arrange rotary-wing connections to remote lodge properties in the Kootenays on request.
