Thunder Bay International Airport

Thunder Bay International Airport is the primary aviation hub for northwestern Ontario, serving a regional economy built on forestry, mining, and grain handling. For private charter passengers, it functions as both a direct destination and a staging point for remote fly-in destinations across the Canadian Shield. The airport is a designated CBSA port of entry, so international arrivals can clear Canadian customs on-site.

The terminal is compact and uncrowded by major-city standards. Private and charter traffic uses the general aviation ramp on the south side of the airport. FBO services are available for fuel, ground handling, and crew needs. The airport is not slot-restricted and does not face the congestion issues common to southern Ontario airports.

Downtown Thunder Bay is roughly 6 km from the terminal, a 10 to 15 minute drive depending on traffic. Car rentals are available at the airport. Taxis and rideshare serve the airport, though options are more limited than in larger cities. For passengers heading to remote fishing or hunting camps, float plane and bush plane connections are available from nearby facilities.
