LIR is the preferred arrival point for private aviation passengers heading to Guanacaste's Pacific beach destinations. Flying into San José (SJO) and driving north adds 4 to 5 hours to any itinerary; LIR cuts that to a short transfer. The airport has customs and immigration for international arrivals, and FBO services are available on the general aviation ramp, though the facility is smaller than what you'd find at a major US hub. Plan accordingly for fuel availability and handling.

The airport sees seasonal peaks tied to Costa Rica's dry season (December through April), when commercial traffic from US carriers increases substantially. During high season, coordination with handling agents in advance is advisable. The runway is approximately 8,800 feet, suitable for most large-cabin and ultra-long-range jets. There are no published 24-hour operations, so late-night arrivals require prior coordination with the airport authority (DGAC).

The Papagayo Peninsula, home to the Four Seasons, Andaz, and several other luxury properties, is about 35 km from the airport, roughly 35 to 45 minutes by car. Tamarindo is approximately 75 km south, around 75 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions. Playa del Coco and Playa Hermosa are closer, under 30 minutes. Liberia city center is 12 km away. Private car and van transfers are the standard option; most resort concierges can arrange pickups. Car rental desks operate in the terminal for passengers who prefer self-driving.
