Norfolk International Airport

Norfolk International Airport handles both commercial and private traffic at the heart of the Hampton Roads metro area, which includes Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, and Newport News. For private aviation, two FBOs operate on the field: Sheltair on the south side and Atlantic Aviation on the north. Neither requires advance slot reservations, and the ramp is considerably less congested than major Northeast airports.

The airport has no published nighttime curfew, though standard noise abatement procedures apply on departure. US Customs and Border Protection inspection services are available for international arrivals, typically with advance notice required. The surrounding area is dominated by defense and maritime industries, including Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval installation in the world by acreage, which means business travel demand is consistent year-round.

Downtown Norfolk is 3 miles from the terminal, a 10-minute drive under normal conditions. Virginia Beach Oceanfront runs about 19 miles east, typically 25-30 minutes. Reaching Hampton, Newport News, or Williamsburg requires crossing the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, which adds 15-20 minutes of tunnel time and can back up significantly during peak hours or incidents. Budget 30-45 minutes to Hampton under normal conditions, and up to 90 minutes when traffic stacks. Richmond is roughly 95 miles northwest via I-64, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Car rental counters are available at the main terminal, and regional car service operators serve the airport for direct transfers.
