Des Moines International handles commercial and private traffic without the congestion of larger hub airports. Downtown Des Moines is 4 miles northeast of the airport, a 10 to 15 minute drive depending on traffic. The Iowa State Capitol and the city's insurance and financial district are both within that radius. Car rental counters are in the commercial terminal, and car service options are available through the FBOs. For western suburbs like West Des Moines and Waukee, drive times are similar or shorter.
