About Avflight Detroit City
Avflight Detroit City operates at Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport, the closest full-service FBO to downtown Detroit. The facility runs 24/7/365 with on-site U.S. Customs for international operations, making it one of the few general aviation airports in the metro area with round-the-clock customs clearance.
The FBO is in the midst of a major transformation. Avflight broke ground in 2025 on a new multimillion-dollar complex that includes a 5,000-square-foot FBO terminal, a 20,000-square-foot heated hangar, and an attached 1,440-square-foot parking garage. The construction is part of a broader airport revitalization that has already delivered LED taxi lighting upgrades and a runway renovation. The city offered Avflight a 30-year leasehold, the first long-term lease in the airport's history, signaling serious commitment to the facility's future.
Avflight has operated at KDET since 2011, and the company plans to double its staff and expand service offerings with the new facility. The airport's location is its greatest asset for charter passengers. Coleman A. Young sits on the east side of Detroit, roughly five miles from the central business district, putting travelers within minutes of the Renaissance Center, Comerica Park, Ford Field, and the Detroit riverfront.
For private aviation passengers attending events at Little Caesars Arena, visiting the Big Three automakers' headquarters, or conducting business in the Midtown and Corktown tech corridors, flying into Detroit City Airport saves significant time compared to arriving at Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport, which is 20 miles southwest. The new facility will bring Avflight Detroit City's physical plant in line with its already strong operational reputation.
Amenities and services
Operations at Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport
Downtown Detroit is about 4 miles west of the airport, typically a 10 to 15 minute drive. The Midtown and New Center neighborhoods are similarly close. Grosse Pointe communities are immediately east, under 5 miles from the ramp. Car service and rideshare are available, though pre-arranged car service is more reliable given the airport's location in a residential area. DTW is roughly 20 miles southwest via I-94, a 25 to 40 minute drive depending on traffic.
