Shannon handles a mix of scheduled and private traffic, but its infrastructure is built for transatlantic operations. The airport has US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance, which means passengers on US-bound flights clear American customs before departure rather than on arrival. For charter passengers flying to the US, this eliminates the customs queue on the American side.

Adare Manor, a popular destination for golf and luxury stays, is 12 miles from the terminal. Dromoland Castle is 7 miles away. The Cliffs of Moher are 35 miles northwest, about 45 minutes.

Car hire desks operate at the terminal. Chauffeured transfers are available through local operators. For passengers continuing to Dublin or other Irish cities, helicopter charter from Shannon is an option that avoids the motorway entirely.
