Smithers Airport

Smithers Airport sits about 3 km east of downtown Smithers, a town of roughly 5,500 people in the Bulkley Valley. For private aviation, this airport is the primary air access point for the region, which draws visitors for steelhead fishing on the Bulkley and Morice rivers, hunting, and skiing at Hudson Bay Mountain. Pacific Coast Jet operates here and handles charter coordination for the area.

The airport has a single paved runway and is classified as a medium airport by Transport Canada. It does not have a Canada Border Services Agency office on site, so international arrivals from the US cannot clear customs here. Flights originating in the US must route through a CBSA port of entry before landing at CYYD. Domestic charter operations have no special slot or permit requirements. The airport is not staffed 24 hours, so after-hours arrivals require coordination with the FBO or airport authority in advance.

Downtown Smithers is about 3 km from the terminal, roughly a 5-minute drive. Car rental is available at the airport, though selection is limited and advance booking is recommended, especially during fishing and ski seasons. Hudson Bay Mountain (Ski Smithers) is about 23 km from the airport via Highway 16 and the ski hill road, typically a 25-minute drive. There is no scheduled helicopter transfer service. Terrace is approximately 145 km to the west (around 90 minutes), and Prince George is about 370 km to the east.
