Louisville generates private aviation demand from two separate sources, and both run on their own schedule. The year-round corporate layer is anchored by Humana, one of the largest health insurers in the country, headquartered downtown and producing constant executive travel to Washington, New York, and Atlanta. Yum\! Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell under one parent company) runs global operations from Louisville, generating international traffic through KSDF customs. Brown-Forman, the family-controlled spirits company behind Jack Daniel's and Woodford Reserve, maintains active travel to London and across its North American distillery network. These are not occasional charter users; they run corporate flight departments or maintain charter contracts.

Then there is Derby week. The Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday of May is the largest single private aviation event in Kentucky. Churchill Downs sits three miles from Bowman Field, and KLOU's position close to the track makes it the first choice for horsemen, owners, and many hospitality guests who want the shortest possible ground transfer. KSDF handles overflow and larger aircraft that exceed Bowman's runway capacity. In the four days surrounding the race, private jet traffic at both airports runs at roughly five times normal volume.

Between those two patterns (consistent corporate demand and the annual May spike) operators position aircraft into and out of Louisville frequently enough to generate repositioning supply across most of the year.

Bowman Field (KLOU) operates exclusively as a general aviation airport, sitting north of downtown Louisville about three miles from Churchill Downs and four miles from Humana's headquarters. The runway accommodates light jets and turboprops. FBO facilities are compact relative to KSDF -- functional for the short-haul corporate and Derby traffic that primarily uses KLOU.

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (KSDF) handles all aircraft sizes through heavy jets, with the primary runway close to 11,000 feet. Signature Flight Support operates the main FBO. KSDF also houses UPS World Port -- the global sorting hub for UPS air packages, the second-busiest cargo operation in the country. The UPS infrastructure means KSDF runs 24 hours with round-the-clock ground service and fueling. CBP is available for international arrivals. Nine miles from downtown by car, about 15 minutes.

SDF-TEB (Teterboro) runs $10,000 to $16,000 light jet. Humana and Yum\! Brands investor relations travel drives consistent demand on this corridor. SDF-ATL prices at $7,000 to $12,000 -- healthcare industry connections between Louisville and Atlanta generate regular traffic. SDF-DCA runs $8,000 to $12,000 light jet. SDF-ORD at $6,000 to $10,000 is the other active short-haul corridor.

Derby week pricing is a separate category. Full-charter rates into Louisville in the week before the first Saturday of May run 50 to 100 percent above normal. Empty legs departing Louisville on Derby Sunday evening (aircraft that flew clients in and need to return to base) appear at 30 to 50 percent below the already-elevated in-market rate. Anyone attending the Derby and flexible on departure timing can find aircraft repositioning out on Sunday night at well below what the inbound leg cost. The window is short: most legs post and fill within 12 hours of the race ending.
