Lexington is the center of American thoroughbred horse racing and breeding. The Bluegrass region around the city holds more than 450 horse farms, and the owners, trainers, and buyers who manage that industry travel by private jet at a rate far above what a city of 300,000 people would otherwise produce.

The horse industry calendar creates the most concentrated demand windows. The airport is 8 miles west of downtown Lexington and about 6 miles from Keeneland Race Course, which is the most direct airport-to-event connection in the city.

During major Keeneland sales events, KLEX adds temporary ramp capacity and coordinates international arrivals through CBP Customs. The airport handles a significant volume of international private jets during the September and October sales -- more than most regional airports of comparable size. Book ramp space in advance for the September and October Keeneland sales, when the international buyer contingent saturates the FBO.

The surrounding horse farm country is 15-30 minutes from the airport depending on which part of the Bluegrass region the destination is. Many farm owners have private access roads and helipads on their properties; KLEX is the fixed-wing gateway.
