Gogo AVANCE (ATG)

Gogo AVANCE L3/L5 is the dominant air-to-ground WiFi on US business jets. Roughly 7,000 aircraft fly with it, mostly Citations, Falcons, and Phenoms. Continental US only, with limited bandwidth, but very low latency for an in-flight system.

Gogo AVANCE L3 and L5 are Gogo Business Aviation's air-to-ground cellular WiFi for business jets. The platform replaced the legacy Gogo Biz service and now sits on roughly 7,000 aircraft in North America: Cessna Citations, Dassault Falcons, Embraer Phenoms, Hawker mid-size jets, and many turboprops. Unlike JetWave or Starlink, AVANCE uses Gogo's 250+ ground towers, not satellites. The result is low latency and continental US coverage but limited bandwidth. flyExclusive, GrandView Aviation, and many Part 135 charter operators run AVANCE-equipped fleets. Starlink is rapidly taking over on new installs.

Strengths

  • Latency around 200ms, competitive with home internet
  • Deployed on roughly 7,000 US business aircraft
  • Lower install cost than satellite systems

Drawbacks

  • Continental US only, no coverage over oceans, Hawaii, or Caribbean
  • Bandwidth-limited at 8-15 Mbps shared
  • Being replaced by Starlink Aviation on new installs

How fast is Gogo AVANCE (ATG) in flight?

AVANCE L5 delivers 8-15 Mbps with 200ms latency. The latency is good, competitive with terrestrial internet. The bandwidth is what feels slow. Email and messaging are snappy. Basic browsing works. HD streaming chokes. Large file transfers crawl. AVANCE only works over the continental US, so flights to Hawaii, the Caribbean, or anywhere transoceanic lose service past the coast.

Is Gogo AVANCE (ATG) free?

Free to passengers. The operator pays a monthly subscription, around $2,000-5,000 per aircraft depending on the data plan. Many charter brokers and fractional programs include WiFi in the hourly rate. Some smaller operators charge per-leg.

Gogo AVANCE (ATG) FAQ

Which business jets have Gogo AVANCE?

Mid-size and light business jets. Cessna Citations (CJ3, XLS, Latitude), Embraer Phenoms (100, 300), Hawker 800/900, light Dassault Falcons, Beechcraft King Airs. Most US Part 135 charter operators with mid-size or smaller aircraft fly AVANCE.

How fast is Gogo AVANCE WiFi?

8-15 Mbps download with 200ms latency. Bandwidth is shared across the cabin, so a packed mid-size jet feels slow. Latency itself is excellent.

Is Gogo AVANCE free on charter flights?

Yes for passengers. The operator pays the subscription, typically $2,000-5,000 per month. Charter brokers usually include WiFi in the listed hourly rate. Some smaller operators charge per-leg.

Does Gogo AVANCE work over oceans?

No. Continental US only. AVANCE is ground-based cellular, so flights over the Atlantic, Pacific, Caribbean, or to Hawaii lose service. Operators flying transoceanic use satellite systems like JetWave or Starlink.

Gogo AVANCE vs Starlink Aviation for business jets?

Starlink is roughly 10-20x faster, works globally, similar low latency, and similar monthly cost. New installs are increasingly Starlink. AVANCE will stay on existing aircraft for years.

Is Gogo AVANCE being replaced?

Yes, by Starlink on new factory deliveries and most retrofits. Gogo has announced its own next-gen 5G ATG service as an upgrade path, but Starlink is the preferred new install for most operators.

What's the difference between Gogo AVANCE L3 and L5?

L5 is the newer, faster variant with higher per-aircraft bandwidth. L3 is the older version with a smaller antenna. Most aircraft delivered since 2020 have L5; older Citations and Phenoms often still have L3.
