Sun Valley Conference
The Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference runs the second full week of July at the Sun Valley Resort in Ketchum, Idaho. It's an invitation-only event that brings together the CEOs of US media, technology, and finance for four days of off-the-record sessions, ski lift rides, and back-channel deal-making. Disney bought ABC at Sun Valley. Comcast looked at acquiring Disney at Sun Valley. The deals don't always close at the conference, but the conversations that lead to them do.
The attendee list is a who's-who of US business: maybe 300 people, almost all of whom arrive by private jet. The conference doesn't publish a guest list, but the Friedman Memorial Airport ramp during the week is the public-facing version of one. Tech CEOs, network heads, bank chiefs, sports team owners, and a rotating cast of senior media figures all land within a 48-hour window each summer.
The aviation impact is dense rather than wide. Total movement numbers stay modest compared to Super Bowl or Masters week, but the concentration of ultra-long-range and heavy iron is unmatched. G650ERs, Global 7500s, and Falcon 8Xs make up a disproportionate share of arrivals.
Where to land for Sun Valley Conference
Friedman Memorial Airport (KSUN) in Hailey is the only realistic option, 12 miles south of Sun Valley Resort. Atlantic Aviation operates the FBO. KSUN sits at 5,318 feet field elevation with one 7,550-foot runway, which constrains heavy aircraft departures during hot summer days. Performance limits at altitude are a real factor for G650-class jets leaving fully loaded in July afternoons.
Ramp space at KSUN is the limiting factor during the conference. The airport publishes a special-event ramp procedure that allocates parking slots in advance. Operators that don't reserve parking can be sent to Boise or Hailey overflow ramps. Pre-coordinate everything weeks ahead.
Boise (KBOI) is the secondary option, 150 miles south. It's a long ground transfer to Sun Valley (about 2.5 hours), so operators typically use Boise for staging or overflow rather than primary arrivals. Hailey, ID Magic Valley Regional (KHLI) is a smaller field that handles light aircraft and turboprops during peak weeks.
When to book empty legs for Sun Valley Conference
Arrivals stack Monday and Tuesday. The conference begins formally Tuesday evening, so attendees arrive Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning depending on their pre-conference schedules. Departures are the cleanest of any major event we track: a tight Friday afternoon through Saturday morning window when essentially everyone leaves at once.
Empty legs into Sun Valley are nearly impossible during conference week. Operators sized the inbound demand and run positioning legs to fill the ramp, but the small attendee count and rigid window mean there's little marginal capacity to monetize. Empty legs out of KSUN appear Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, mostly to LA, the Bay Area, New York, and Aspen (where some attendees continue for the weekend).
For the rest of the year, Sun Valley is a high-end ski destination with a separate aviation cadence. December through March produces its own private jet activity tied to ski season, distinct from the July conference week.
