About Castries Ground Handling
George F.L. Charles Airport in Castries, St. Lucia operates as a regional facility for private and inter-island flights, with ground handling services available for arriving charter aircraft. The airport sits just 2 kilometers north of the capital city, on a narrow strip of land where the single 6,227-foot runway runs parallel to Vigie Beach, giving passengers views of the Caribbean Sea on approach from both directions.
Ground handling at the airport is provided by several operators including Aviation Services (St. Lucia) Ltd. and Pike Aviation. Services cover marshalling, fueling, baggage handling, and basic passenger support. Customs and immigration clearance is available for international arrivals. The facility is more basic than a full-service FBO, so passengers should set expectations accordingly. There is no dedicated VIP lounge or premium passenger terminal.
The airport operates weekday hours, generally 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, which limits its utility for early morning or late evening arrivals. For flights outside these hours, or for larger aircraft that need more runway, Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) at the island's southern tip offers a 9,003-foot runway and longer operating hours.
The advantage of George F.L. Charles is its proximity to Castries and the island's northwest coast resorts. Passengers heading to Marigot Bay, Rodney Bay, or the Pitons can save significant drive time compared to arriving at Hewanorra, which is over an hour's drive from most resort areas. The cruise ship terminals in Castries are essentially across the road from the airport, making it convenient for passengers connecting to or from yacht charters. For light and midsize jets that can operate on the available runway, George F.L. Charles puts passengers closer to the action on St. Lucia's more developed coast.

Operations at George F. L. Charles Airport
Central Castries is a 5-10 minute drive from the terminal. Rodney Bay and Gros Islet, where most of the north's hotels and the IGY Rodney Bay Marina are located, take 25-35 minutes depending on traffic. Cap Estate and the north tip of the island add another 10-15 minutes beyond Rodney Bay. Taxis are available at the airport; there are no rideshare services operating in St. Lucia. Pre-arranged car service through your hotel or FBO is the most reliable option. For guests staying south of Castries, Marigot Bay is approximately 20 minutes. Vieux Fort and the southern resorts are better served by Hewanorra.
