About Galveston Aviation Services
Galveston's Scholes International Airport occupies a site four miles west of downtown on Galveston Island, and the FBO operation runs from the restored terminal building that was rebuilt after Hurricane Ike devastated the island in 2008. The current FBO operator, Island Jet Center, is located inside the terminal and provides full-service Jet A and 100LL fueling, hangar space rental, hotel reservations, rental vehicle coordination, and concierge services. The terminal building itself has an art deco character that reflects the airport's origins in 1931, when Galveston first established commercial aviation service on this 120-acre tract. For passengers, the location is convenient to the island's main attractions: Moody Gardens is a short drive away, the Strand Historic District and its restaurants are about 10 minutes east, and the seawall beaches run the length of the south shore. The airport has a single 6,001-foot runway and sits just nine feet above sea level, which is worth noting for scheduling around Gulf Coast weather. Island Jet Center offers a pilots lounge with a snooze room, complimentary snacks and refreshments, and a courtesy car for ground transportation. Quick-turn service is available, and 24/7 operations can be arranged with advance notice. Galveston is about 50 miles southeast of Houston via I-45, and flying directly to the island eliminates the often heavy traffic on the causeway. For charter passengers heading to a beach weekend, a cruise departure from the Port of Galveston, or a Moody Gardens event, this small island airport provides a relaxed, uncongested arrival.

Operations at Scholes International At Galveston Airport
Downtown Galveston and the Seawall are roughly 3 miles east of the airport, a 10-minute drive under normal conditions. UTMB Health, the main regional medical center, is about 4 miles away. Ground transportation options are limited compared to a major hub: pre-arranged car service from Houston-based operators is the most reliable choice. Rideshare is available but coverage can be inconsistent depending on time of day. Houston is 50 miles north via I-45. Drive time runs 45 to 60 minutes outside peak hours, but the Galveston Causeway and I-45 through Texas City can add 30 or more minutes during summer weekends, Mardi Gras, and major event days. Passengers connecting onward to Houston may find it more practical to position through HOU or IAH depending on timing.
