About Southmost Aviation
Southmost Aviation is a family-owned FBO that has operated at Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport since 1946, with the current management team of five brothers running the business together since the early 1990s. That kind of multi-generational continuity gives the operation deep institutional knowledge of cross-border aviation, which matters at an airport just minutes from the Mexican border. The FBO provides hangars, fueling with Jet A and 100LL, maintenance services, and pilot lounges. U.S. Customs is available for international arrivals, making Brownsville a practical clearance point for flights from Monterrey, Mexico City, and other Mexican destinations. The airport is the closest commercial field to South Padre Island, the barrier island beach resort on the Gulf of Mexico that draws spring breakers, sport fishermen, and vacationers year-round. It is also the nearest airport to SpaceX Starbase at Boca Chica, where Starship launch operations have brought a new wave of aerospace visitors, engineers, and executives to the region. A new 91,000-square-foot terminal opened in 2021 to accommodate growing demand. For charter passengers, Southmost Aviation offers a warm, personal service style that reflects its family ownership. Ground transportation to South Padre Island takes about 30 minutes, and the FBO staff can help arrange car rentals and hotel recommendations. The Rio Grande Valley location also puts passengers near excellent birding sites and the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. Brownsville's border-town character and its growing role in commercial spaceflight make this an increasingly interesting destination for private aviation.
